Project Description

When you are sad, people helpfully remind you “it takes more muscles to frown than to smile.” If you are angry, people kindly play classical music to calm you. If you are depressed, you’ll be the recipient of many helpful calls to “Cheer up” and reassurances that “it’s not that bad.” While I do believe the desire to make others happy is a noble goal, I take issue with how people seem to prefer to cover up any unhappiness with a smile. I try to address the effects these emotional band-aids can have in my piece; they create a false happiness for the world to see while the individual still suffers from their original emotional issues, now compounded by the issue of appearing happy for the sake of others, making it difficult for a person to seek emotional help.
